Nothing Says Smooth Like Silk Sheets And Comforters

Silk sheets, comforters and pillowcases come in many different styles and colors and silk is considered to be one of the best fabrics for softness.  Since silk sheets are machine washable they are easy to care for.

Made from the cocoon of certain insects, silk sheets and comforters are a great all natural way to bed down for the night.  Like a machine, a small insect spins the material that will ultimately become your silk sheets, and other fine bedding.

Silk sheets and silk comforters use a Japanese unit of measure known as the momme weight.  Other fabrics use the thread count as a measure of quality.  Generally, silk sheets and pillowcases and other silk bedding have a momme weight of between 12-19.  The higher the momme weight, the heavier the fabric.

There are several types of silk used for silk sheets and comforters such as:

  • Niol silk - also known as raw silk, is un-dyed and untreated, and is not shiny and smooth. It is very similar to cotton linen.
  • Jacquard silk - used mainly for duvet covers and decorative pillows, because of the combination of shiny and matte finishes.
  • Habotai silk - only slightly shiny and smooth. Because it's lightweight it is perfect for summer and warm climates.
  • Fuji silk - drapes well, is not very shiny but extremely soft.
  • Charmeuse silk - smooth and shiny and drapes great. It is the most popular of the silks.

Whichever style of silk fits your lifestyle, silk sheets are a great way to bring comfort and class, with easy maintenance, to your bedroom sanctuary.
